The Fair Housing Justice Center’s 12th Anniversary Acting for Justice Awards Benefit
HONORING CIVIL RIGHTS ATTORNEYS, EDUCATORS, AND ARTISTS FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS TO FAIR HOUSING
On September 25, 2017, the Fair Housing Justice Center (FHJC) will be holding its 12th Anniversary Acting for Justice Awards Benefit at the NYU Kimmel Center. This is an opportunity to recognize individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to fair housing, and to celebrate the FHJC’s twelve years of work to combat housing discrimination in the New York City region.
This year, the FHJC will be honoring several civil rights leaders, attorneys, educators, and artists. Some of the honorees include legal scholar and acclaimed author, most recently of Loving: Interracial Intimacy in America and the Threat to White Supremacy, Sheryll Cashin; celebrity correspondent Norman Lear and the production team of the housing episode of the EPIX docu-series America Divided, including Solly Granatstein, Abby Ellis, and Karim Hajj; and Broadway actor and concert/recording artist Darius de Haas, who is also hosting the event.
The event will be premiering a new award dedicated to the FHJC’s late Board member, Kathy Schrier, for an “Outstanding Fair Housing Tester.” The first award will be made posthumously to one of the FHJC’s first testers, L.B. Williams. Before joining the FHJC Board, Kathy Schrier was instrumental in helping to create the Acting for Justice testing program in partnership with The Actors Fund. The Actors Fund will also receive an award that evening.
The evening will also feature a musical performance from by “Hamilton” star Brandon Victor Dixon, and a raffle for two tickets to the smash Broadway musical.
The event promises to be one of celebration and thoughtful conversation about the importance of continuing the struggle to ensure fair housing for all in the New York City region. The awards program will begin at 7 pm, with a one-hour VIP reception at 6 pm.
